This eBook guideline will show you how to prepare your manuscript for IJSmart publishing. The info below is specific to Microsoft Word 2016, but the steps are similar to other versions of Word.

Set paragraph indentations and line spacing

To ensure that your book body text displays consistently, you’ll want to indent paragraphs (Tab spacing doesn’t convert to IJSmart) and set line spacing. To ensure consistency and save time, modify the Normal style. This will automatically apply the formatting.

  1. On the Home tab, right-click the Normal style and choose Modify
  2. Click the Format list (the drop-down at the bottom of the dialog box) and choose Paragraph. This opens another dialog box
  3. Under Indentation > Special, set First line indent to 0.2″ (5 mm)
  4. Under Spacing, set Before and After to 0 pt, and Line spacing to Single
  5. Click OK

Format Chapter Titles

As you write your book, apply Heading 1 to chapter titles. This will also help you later when you create your table of contents.

  1. Place your cursor next to the first chapter title.
  2. On the Home tab, click Heading 1.
  3. Set the alignment to Center.
  4. Repeat for each chapter title.

Create a Table of Contents

A table of contents (TOC) is important for a good eBook reading experience. A working TOC allows readers to navigate between chapters easily. By following the instructions on this page, you’ll create two types of TOCs for your eBook:

Add front and back matter

Your eBook should include a title page with your book title and author name. Frontmatter includes:

Back matter can include:

Insert and format Images

IJSmart Publishing converts and uploads images to the IJSmart Store. They then display on the Amazon Kindle and supported devices. We recommend that all images be submitted at 300 pixels per inch at the size they will appear in your eBook. To make sure readers have the best experience, use high-definition images wherever possible. IJSmart devices and reading applications do not support TIFF, multi-frame GIFs, or any image with transparency.

Image resolution measures the quality and clarity of an image. For eBooks, image resolution is measured by pixels per inch (PPI). Images with high PPI (300 or higher) will be clearer than those with low PPI (less than 300). There is a direct relationship between image PPI and image size. For example, an image that is 300 PPI at 1″ x 1″ (2.5 x 2.5 cm) is high-resolution. However, if you increase that image to 2″ x 2″ (5 x 5 cm), the resolution decreases by half to 150 PPI.

Think of PPI like blocks in a box. In image A, the blocks in the box are packed with little space around them. This is like a high-resolution image. In image B, you place those same blocks in a larger box and the space around the blocks increases. This is a low-resolution image.

Tips for submitting high-resolution images

How to check image resolution

  1. Right-click on the image file and select “Properties”
  2. In the image properties window, click on the “Details” tab
  3. Resolution can be found under the “Image” header

Image position

For text-heavy books like novels, we recommend inserting images between lines of text. To insert an image in Word:

  1. Click where you want to insert the image
  2. Go to the Insert tab
  3. In the “Illustrations” section, click Pictures
  4. Find the image file you want to insert
  5. Click Insert

Add page breaks according to eBook Guideline

Adding pages breaks ensures your text displays wherever you want one page to end and the next to begin:

  1. Place your cursor where you want your page to end
  2. Go to the Insert tab
  3. Click Page Break

Add footnotes

Footnotes in your eBook must have working links so readers can click easily from content to footnote and back

  1. Place your cursor where you want the footnote to appear
  2. On the References tab, click Insert Footnote
eBook Guideline
